FRIDA AND DIEGO
To complement the exhibition FRIDA KAHLO AND DIEGO RIVERA: Masterpieces from the Gelman Collection Exhibition (9th July - 2 October ) at Pallant House Gallery, we present a series of related films and a talk.
The works of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera in the exhibition come from the collection of Jacques Gelman, a Mexican film producer who promoted the comedian Cantiflas, and the festival will show 2 of the films Cantiflas made in Mexico before ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ made him internationally known.
One of the many celebrity visitors to Mexico was Sergei Eisenstein, disillusioned by his attempt to work in Hollywood, who shot what could have been his greatest work in Mexico, but was never allowed to edit it.
The festival will screen ‘Thunder Over Mexico’ (1933), drawn from his Mexican footage. Other films to be shown include Eisenstein’s ‘Battleship Potemkin’ (1925); the documentary ‘The Secret Life of Sergei Eisenstein’ (1987); Joseph Losey’s ‘The Assassination of Trotsky’ (1972) starring Richard Burton; Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen’s pioneering documentary ‘Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti’ (1984) with Laura Mulvey discussing her film, and Selma Hayak’s tribute ‘Frida’ (2002), in which she gives a committed performance as the artist.
