Norwegian Wood
Noruwei No Mori

Exquisite adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s famous book often called the “Japanese Catcher In The Rye” by critics.

Upon hearing the Beatles song "Norwegian Wood," Toru (Matsuyama) remembers back to his life in the 1960s, when his friend Kizuki killed himself and he grew close to Naoko, Kizuki's girlfriend. As the two try, in very different ways, to contend with their grief, Toru forms a bond with another woman, Midori.

Oscar-nominated director Tran Anh Hung (‘The Scent of Green Papaya’) faced a huge challenge in adapting Murakami's best-loved book, internationally hailed a modern classic. But he's really pulled it off with this mesmeric, lyrical film with landscape shots of lush, green mountains and snow-covered valleys reflect both the vibrancy and defeat in the eyes of our confused young lovers. With exquisite photography and a haunting soundtrack by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, this is a labour of love and should satisfy newcomers to the story. (subtitles)
