Winner of Golden Bear, Berlin 2011. A couple, Nader and Simin, have opposite ideas about living abroad, (away from Iran), but the same opinions about divorce.
Nader (Peyman Moaadi) and Simin (Leila Hatami) argue about living abroad. Simin prefers to live abroad to provide better opportunities for their only daughter, Termeh. However, Nader refuses to go because he thinks he must stay in Iran and take care of his father (Ali-Asghar Shahbazi), who suffers from Alzheimers.
However, Simin is determined to get a divorce and leave the country with her daughter. A gripping moral and social drama set in present-day Iran, the brilliance of the film is the way it manages to keep afloat, at the same time, our compassion for the two children in the case. Asghar Farhadi’s follow-up to the fine ‘About Elly’ should be compulsive viewing for anyone wondering what has happened to Iranian cinema. It is compelling viewing for just about everybody. Tense and narratively complex, formally dense and morally challenging, it is also the first-ever movie to win 3 Bears from the Berlin Film Festival. (subtitles)
