Midnight in Paris

Back by Popular Demand

Woody Allen’s latest film is a romantic comedy about a family travelling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

Gil and Inez travel to Paris as a tag-along vacation on her parents' business trip. Gil is a struggling writer and falls in love with the city and thinks they should move there after they get married, but Inez does not share his romantic notions of the city or the idea that the 1920s was the golden age.

When Inez goes off dancing with her friends, Gil takes a walk at midnight and discovers what could be the ultimate source of inspiration for writing. Gil's daily walks at midnight in Paris could take him closer to the heart of the city but further from the woman he's about to marry.

The time shift to the 20s includes the Fitzgeralds, Hemingway (Corey Stoll), Cole Porter (Yves Beck), Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates), Salvador Dali (Adrian Brody) - a gag about Buñuel turns up later in the movie; ‘Midnight’ is Allen’s toast to the Surrealists. It’s his dream curated by the fan of great musicians and writers, the culture-mad student, a delightful wish fulfilment that is part of the movie’s charm. Not surprisingly, it was chosen to open this year’s Cannes film festival - to great success.
