Winner of the Audience Award at the 17th Chichester International Film Festival
Adapted from John Boyne’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, this film tells the compelling story of an unexpected friendship between two boys living on opposite sides of a concentration camp fence, a fictional tale that offers a unique perspective on how prejudice, hatred & violence affect innocent people, particularly children, during wartime.
Through the lens of an eight year old boy (Asa Butterfield), largely shielded from the reality of World War II, we witness a forbidden friendship that forms between Bruno, the son of a Nazi commandant (David Hewlis), & Shmuel (Jack Scanlon), an interned Jewish boy.
Though the two are separated physically by a barbed wire fence, their lives become inescapably intertwined.
