This impressive directional debut by UK actress Meneka Das, inspired by her own upbringing in India is a simple love story about a young girl's journey to fight for her dreams and the love of the man who inspired her.
A little village in 1970’s northern India is Asha's (Menela Das) world. Whatever she knows and wants is right here in her humble existence with her grandparents and her soul mate Lalli. Then Seth (Joe Henderson, Becoming Jane) comes along, the handsome son of an Indian Commissioner, with Sheila, the beautiful daughter of a British missionary.
Seth and Asha's common love for poetry draws them closer - awakening Asha to a dream to become more like him and strive for a better future. But it comes at a price.
This film is more about the telling than the tale, a tapestry of small moments, with fine photography of the Northern landscape and a deft East-West score. Its simplicity is in the tradition of the 50s/60s films of writer-director Bimal Roy, and is a beautiful independent gem well worth seeing. A huge success at this years Chichester Film festival.
