EDUCATING RITA

Lewis Gilbert renewed his happy relationship with theatre when, during the early 80s, he saw Willy Russell’s ‘Pygmalion’ play in the West End.

Rita, an intelligent 26 year old hairdresser, does not want her life to run on rails. She wants choice but Frank, the teacher who can give her that choice, is on a downward spiral.

Both can help each other. Frank gives Rita the education she wants, while Rita, energetic and optimistic, brings new life to Frank.

British rather than Hollywood finance enabled Gilbert to have Julie Walters play on film the part she created on the stage. His Alfie, Michael Caine, was, by then, the perfect age to play Frank.
