Two sisters who haven't seen each other for 15 years gradually rediscover common ground and a way of relating to each other in writer/director Philippe Claudel’s debut feature, a subtle drama where head & heart coalesce to sublime effect and Kirsten Scott Thomas as Juliette is quite outstanding.
Waiting at an airport for her younger sister Lea (Elsa Zylberstein), Juliette is a plainly dressed, middle-aged woman with tired hair and even more tired eyes, whose back-story slowly emerges throughout the picture. Explaining "auntie" Juliette's sudden appearance, Lea tells her pushy elder daughter Lys (Lise Segur) that she's "been away for a long time, and in England". The narrative pieces together Juliette's past bit by suspenseful bit, so the audience is kept equally on edge as those around her.
Kristin Scott Thomas deserves an award for her stupendous turn as a woman with a dark past trying to rebuild her relationship with her estranged sister, and regain her place in society. Highly regarded at its Berlin premiere, this is a scintillating drama about pain and healing made with both intelligence and passion. (subtitles)
