During 1947, after 350 years of occupying India, the British decide to leave, but not before separating Islamic Pakistan and secular India. Millions of Muslims crossed from India to Pakistan, while an equal number of Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians crossed over from the other side. Against this historical background comes a later-day Romeo & Juliet, with Gian Singh (Jimi Mistry) & Naseem Khan (Kristin Kreuk).
With the partition of India and Pakistan sparking bloodshed between Sikhs and Muslims, their respective people might be mortal enemies but Gian and Naseem are determined to follow their hearts. As their love flourishes and eventually finds acceptance in Gian’s village, the search for Naseem’s family goes on. When it proves successful, their delicate world is shattered.
With its rich tapestry of stories and characters based on real people and events, Partition is a moving & timeless tale of innocent people struggling to find happiness in treacherous times. Neve Campbell also stars as a sympathetic British subject in this large scale Canadian production which boasts sweeping vistas, a heart-warming story of forbidden love and a timely commentary of religious intolerance.
