Amr Khaled is one of the most recognizable faces in the Muslim world, his television sermons on Arab satellite channels boast more than 40 million viewers & his website received 26 million hits last year. He is an Islamic televangelist with an international following akin to that of a rock star. In 2007 Time Magazine voted him one of the 100 Most Influential People of the Year.
Western journalists have hailed him “The Anti-Bin Laden” & “The Rock Star Preacher”. So who is this enigmatic phenomenon that has changed the face of Islamic preaching & polarized the Muslim world? What lies behind the success of his message? Where will he go from here? Will he continue to climb the ladder of international stardom, will he take on the mantle of social reformer or will he mobilise his huge fan base & turn to politics?
Since June 2007, British filmmaker Mick Csáky has been shooting a documentary profile of Amr Khaled following him as he travels throughout the Middle East, Europe & the USA, spreading his message of Islamic renaissance.
