And the Winner for Best Foreign Film is…
A selection of the official 2007 Oscar submissions for Best Foreign Film:
The German Submission -
An intricately plotted, multi-layered drama, The Edge of Heaven confirms Fatih Akin (Head-On) not only as one of European cinema's most assured young talents, but as a filmmaker of depth and compassion. Moving easily between the seemingly divergent cultures of Germany and Turkey, this is a keenly observed story of two families whose lives become intertwined. It begins in Germany, where Ali, a widower, invites prostitute Yeter to move in with him. Ali's son Nejat initially disapproves, but warms to the woman when he discovers that she sends money home to Turkey for her daughter Ayten's university studies. Yeter's sudden death leads Nejat to Istanbul to search for Ayten, unaware that she has already left Turkey and fled to Germany, where she has been befriended and taken in by a young German woman, Lotte. Starring Hanna Schgullah and Nursel Kose as the 2 mothers. (Subtitles)
