A selection of the official 2007 Oscar submissions for Best Foreign Film:

The Mexican Submission -

Screened to rapturous acclaim in Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize, Silent Light is set amidst a Mennonite community in northern Mexico. The minimalist narrative focuses on the plight of Johan (Cornelio Wall), a husband and father who breaks the rules of his society by embarking upon an affair with another woman (Marie Pankratz). Inspired by primal, Neo-Biblical imagery and the work of Carl Dreyer, Silent Light is a moving meditation of love and betrayal. Reygadas again uses non-actors to superlative effect, teasing out performances of remarkable intensity. Although patience is required for its slow, unfolding pace, Silent Light rewards one with a visual and spiritual tour de force. (Subtitles)
