Sir David Lean (1908-1991):
The Early Films 1942-1955
Filmed on location, this story of a lonely American spinster finding romance on holiday offered a glamorous evocation of Brief Encounter, with Venice narrowly beating Katharine Hepburn as the true object of passion. Never had the city been so lovingly photographed. Although the film drifted over budget, Lean justified the extra cost with an unerring feel for the box-office ingredients of startling spectacle and emotion. With Rossano Brazzi, Isa Miranda and Darren McGavin.
