Coward's insistence on fidelity to an original play whose strength lay in dialogue not action resulted in one of Lean's more static films. But Margaret Rutherford provides compensation with her marvellous performance as the medium Madame Arcati. A role that she had played on the stage, it became the foundation of her subsequent career as the great eccentric of British cinema. With Rex Harrison, Kay Hammond and Constance Cummings.
