Big screen ambitions and frustration at the continuing ban of the 1976 version spurred Potter and Trodd to propose Brimstone and Treacle as a movie.
Sting, then just emerging as lead singer with The Police, grabs the opportunity to play Martin the Devil and makes it his own. Joan Plowright is the Mother. Although Denholm Elliot reprises and enlarges upon the itchy Father, this version amounts to quite a different take on the material as it shifts from psychological intensity to the borders of creepy thriller.
This concludes the 8 examples of Dennis Potter’s work in this section of the retrospective.
