Soft Targets is Stephen Poliakoff’s teasing foray at a London Cold War thriller set in the grimmest and silliest years of Thatcher and Reagan. A low level Soviet diplomat is pitched into a pre-yuppie vortex of bright young parties and posh anomie but he isn’t a spy and his only career ambition is to be sent back to Moscow, if necessary in disgrace. Poliakoff lurches elegantly in and out of all the genre stereotypes and reverses most of them. As the lost Russian Ian Holm gives surely the most surprising and compelling performance of even his career, with Helen Mirren terrific as an English girl whose displacement is even greater. And there is a first fleeting screen cameo from Rupert Everett.

We hope to welcome the writer Stephen Poliakoff to introduce this film.
