This film represents a different strand in Ken Trodd’s work – the gritty socially concerned piece often with a political edge. Leeds United and United Kingdom are other examples.
Made more than a decade before his Oscar hit, Chariots of Fire, this is Colin Welland’s story of life in a Manchester secondary modern school. It was honoured by BAFTA and the Writer’s Guild.
Both a fascinating snapshot of its time and with a humanity which transcends the era Roll On can be placed beside Cathy Come Home and Up The Junction as a classic of the new 16mm telefilms – unveiling a hidden world but utterly entertaining as well. Ensemble cast includes Clive Swift, Jack Shepherd and Tony Melody.
We hope to welcome Colin Welland to introduce this film
