The Ballroom of Romance
For many years this little film has been a great favourite, especially in Ireland, despite it being rarely shown publicly and never released theatrically or on DVD. A woman comes to the Friday night dance at the crossroads ballroom for the last time. Will she leave alone or choose from one of her suitors? The stars are Brenda Fricker and Cyril Cusack but this is an emotional and artistic triumph for everyone in front and behind the camera. Many honours include awards from BAFTA and New York.

One of Ourselves
One of Ourselves is something of a companion piece to Ballroom – also from a William Trevor story and again offering an affectionate and closely observed look at life in an Irish town. On his 15th birthday, John Joe is invited to become ‘one of ourselves’ by sampling his first Guinness and Woodbines but he must first decide whether to give up a Falstaffian best friend (Cyril Cusack) with a rather different vision of his future. There are sharp and funny cameos from Bill Paterson and Niall Toibin.
