Ken Trodd’s latest collaboration with Pat O’Connor is from a huge best seller by Maeve Binchy. The book’s vastness has been wonderfully distilled into its glistening essence by Andrew Davies’s astute screenplay.
This is a Celtic version of the ugly duckling story – the tall generous girl is going to win the handsome lad from her more crassly lovely peers. But it’s also a warm and funny snapshot of a long-vanished Ireland. Terrific acting all round, but the standout is Minnie Driver’s fresh appealing Benny, one of those rare feature debuts whose palpable inner fire transcends the material.
