International Panorama: France
In the new film by Belgium filmmaking brothers Pierre and Luc Dardenne, the (Rosetta, The Child), they make a nod to Bresson’s L’Argent.
In order to become a bar owner with her boyfriend, Lorna (Arta Dobroshi), an Albanian living in Belgium, becomes an accomplice to a diabolical plan devised by mobster Fabio (Fabrizio Rongione). He has orchestrated a sham marriage between her and Claudy (Jérémie Renier) allowing her to obtain Belgian citizenship, to then marry a Russian Mafioso so he can acquire the same quickly. However, for the second marriage to be possible, Fabio has planned to kill Claudy. Will Lorna keep silent?
More narrative-driven than their earlier films, there is also a superb sense of place, set in the urban backdrop of Liege, and was one of the highlights of Cannes this year. (subtitles)
