Los Angeles, circa 1920's, a little immigrant girl, Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) finds herself in a hospital recovering from a fall. She strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man (Lee Pace) who captivates her with a whimsical story about five mythical heroes that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. Making sure he keeps the girl interested in the story, the man interweaves her family and people she likes from the hospital into his tale.
Shot in 26 countries, this second feature from the unique imagination of Tarsem (after the visually ravishing The Cell) proves worth the eight-year wait. A film of intense scope and visual ambition, with echoes of Wizard of Oz, Princess Bride and Baron Munchausen – but definitely not for children!
