Of Time and the City

Screened to unprecedented acclaim at Cannes, this marks the return to the screen of Terence Davies, arguably the UK’s most distinctive filmmaker. This idiosyncratic and hugely personal paean to his Liverpool hometown blends a poetic account of his early life with contemporary and archive footage of the city.

A eulogy to Davies’ birthplace that also weaves together the themes that define his early narrative works (sexuality, Catholicism, death, loss and the power of cinema), the film also expresses anger at the post-1945 slum clearance that destroyed the working class communities.

Narrated by Davies himself with grace and humour, the film works both as a docu-fantasia and a fascinating account of this most historic of cities.
