In 1977 Harvey Milk became the first openly gay man to be voted into American major public office. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum.
Sean Penn stars as Harvey Milk, under the direction of Gus Van Sant, charting the last eight years of Milk’s life. Living in New York, turning 40 & looking for more purpose, Milk & his lover Scott Smith (James Franco) found Castro Camera, in a San Franciscan neighbourhood soon to become a haven for gay people from across the country. With support from Scott, new friends & volunteers, Milk plunges headfirst into the choppy waters of politics, but his persistent determination drives him & Scott apart. While making his fourth, & victorious, run for office, Milk takes a new lover, Jack Lira (Diego Luna).
At the same time, the political agendas of Milk & those of another newly elected supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin), increasingly diverge & their personal destinies tragically converge.
