Broken Embraces
- Los Abrazos Rotos

Mateo Blanco (Lluis Homar, Fermat’s Room), a writer/director, suffered a brutal car crash 14 years earlier, in which he lost not only his sight, but the love of his life, Lena (Penelope Cruz). He reduces himself to his pseudonym, Harry Caine - as the only way he can survive is with the idea that Mateo Blanco died on Lanzarote with his beloved Lena. Screened to considerable acclaim at Cannes, ‘Broken Embraces’ confirms Almodóvar as one of the greatest auteurs in world cinema and solidifies his working relationship with the luminous Cruz, who gives a complex and moving performance. This riveting, sensuous and exuberant film within a film is strikingly rendered by Mexican DOP Rodrigo Prieto. This film also successfully opened this year’s Chichester Film Festival following Cannes (subtitles).
