David Hare: The Political Romantic
Charlotte Rampling and Michael Gambon star in playwright David Hare's thriller. Tory politician Clara Paige (Rampling) has become relentlessly ambitious in her pursuit of power at the expense of her relationships with her sadsack husband (Gambon) and son. But when she is sent to Paris on a trip, she discovers just how far she's willing to go by murdering a former business associate she suspects of blackmail. Her guilt is further inflamed by engaging in an affair with a wealthy mogul, even while attempting to evade those investigating the disappearance. This is a psychological drama that criticizes the hypocrisy of politicians (ever topical!) while maintaining a suspenseful narrative well directed by Hare. The support cast includes Jane Asher and Iain Glen.
