ENGLAND MADE ME

Peter Duffell's first-rate screen version of Graham Greene’s novel has transferred the action from Sweden to Germany in the 30’s, thereby reaping for themselves a crop of helpful historical signposts and a lot of dramatic menace. Michael York (Tony) plays an innocent idealist ultimately snuffed out by the intrigues and ruthlessness that marked Nazi Germany. Superficially he runs afoul of rascally Peter Finch's (Erik Krogh) great financial empire based in Germany, but his goodness is in wider conflict with the coarsened values of decadence and nihilism. It's a bleak piece of Greene, relieved by the humour of Michael Hordern's Minty. The final key character is Haller (Joss Ackland); he works as Krogh's right-hand man and plays a central role in scenes towards the end of the film. This is clearly a lavish production, and the film earned a BAFTA nomination.
