A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
The 18th Chichester International Film festival
Actress Retrospective: Meryl Streep
A Prairie Home Companion, is a radio variety show recorded and performed live in front of an audience in a theatre in Minnesota. A show from another era… it has been cancelled. The regulars are performing on the last show, including Dusty & Lefty, singing/guitar playing cowboys with a risqué sense of humour, and the Johnson Girls, a sister singing duo (a wonderful combination of Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep) who have a penchant for talking over each other.
As all this goes on, a mysterious woman in a white trench coat who is on a mission wanders around the theatre, while the show's dim security guard (Kevin Kline) follows. This final film by Robert Altman is a very enjoyable feel-good movie, with an amusing country and western singing performance from Streep pre Mamma Mia!
