Highly symbolic and allegorical drama about the search of a son for his father in the chaotic times of the Mexican Revolution and the early 1900s and nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes (1967).

Archetypal figures from early Mexican cinema appear from time to time, and the violence of the revolutionary period is not glossed over. As the son (John Gavin) searches for the father (Ignacio López Tarso) scenes of the father and his earthy way of living are screened.

Although it relies heavily on knowledge of Mexican history, it also communicates visually in a magical realist style Based upon the best-selling magical-realist novel by Juan Rulfo, the film is faithful to the actual book, reflecting mystery, sadness and loneliness. Velo represents with extreme fidelity a Mexico that was being victim of a Revolution, the town, the costumes, the people, the houses. The film also contains echoes of Carrington’s breakdown as depicted in her painting and short story Down Below. (subtitles)
