Kurosawa's samurai Macbeth draws on the imagery of Noh theatre to create an extraordinary fusion of the Jacobean and the Japanese.

Arguably Kurosawa's finest adaptation of a Western literary classic, this samurai Macbeth relocates the Scottish play to the civil wars of the 16th-century Age of Warring States. Kurosawa stays reasonably faithful to Shakespeare's plot, but draws on the imagery of Noh theatre to create an extraordinary fusion of the Jacobean and the Japanese. Moody, dramatic, and violent, it also contains an indelible performance from Isuzu Yamada as Lady Macbeth and the ever charismatic Toshiro Mifune.(subtitles)
