A legendary film, which has been elevated to haute cult status.
A Dutchman (James Mason), living in the 17th century, is not permitted to rest until he finds a woman who loves him enough to die for him. He meets the reincarnation of a woman (Ava Gardner) from his dead past and falls in love. The story progresses to a hair-raising reconciliation of past and present. The film also stars Marius Goring, Nigel Patrick, Sheila Sim and Harold Warrender.
Unavailable theatrically for many years we present this on a beautiful new 35mm print which has undergone an extensive restoration by the Film Foundation and George Eastman House. This is one of a handful of films from this period of saturated colour and the gorgeous cinematography of Jack Cardiff. Many of these films incorporate within their story and script elements of literature, art, mystery and timeless love that transcends death. This one delivers all. Albert Lewin's masterpiece was photographed in glorious Technicolor by Jack Cardiff, which is the subject of the superb documentary ‘Cameraman’ showing earlier tonight and repeated.
